About the Farm and Hatchery
The History
We’re so glad you stopped by and want to first thank you for your support if you’ve bought chickens from us or plan to soon! We truly believe chickens make the world happier – and less hungry! Now grab your favorite beverage and sit back. Let’s go back in time together.
Chisel’d Creek Farm found us one late summer day as we stood on a worn paved drive, looking up an 1800s farmhouse in southern Maine. Our realtor was holding his car keys and we told him “this was the one.” The rough land had once been a potato farm, an apple orchard, a draft horse operation, and part of various homestead endeavors. It had been logged and we had work to do to repair the damage done; the old house with it’s original beams and floors had long lacked care. But we live for hard work. After all, America was built on sweat and determination.
What happened over the next two years was filled with exactly that. We built chicken facilities, began orchards, carved out roads, began building a woodshop, and consistently practiced responsible land care with permaculture, sustainability, and organic principles.
Then Chisel’d Creek Farm officially began as a business from a lengthy plan. Our farm is entirely run by our own family and the project plans never slow down. If you want to read more about our farm and check out exciting details on our projects (like our Katahdin sheep pilot program) check out our blog page at ChiseldCreekFarm.com/blog.
Why the Chisel?
Trees are magnificent creatures. At our farm we are dedicated to growing and harvesting our own trees. It’s self-sufficiency and sustainability at its finest. We use the lumber to build farm structures and the beautiful wood furniture we sell. Though we don’t always use hand tools to build the furniture, it’s the favorite for our carpenters because it’s true art and a good craftsman is an artist.
When we were considering farm names, our year round creek was the favorite feature on our land and the way it’s cut in the bank and twists around the property quite suggests hand-craftsmanship.
But a 21st century farm must also be “dope” as the kids say. Hence we dropped an ‘e’ and made our brand ever so “snatched.” For a word translation, go ask your preteen!
The Hatchery
Why chickens? Poultry can improve communities by enriching soil, controlling pests, increasing food security, and offering therapeutic companionship. We enjoy raising and caring for our flocks and are so excited for anyone who wants to become poultry parents too.
Our birds are all hand-selected, bred for specific purposes and traits, raised with care and affection, and given the best life we can provide. We feed only high quality, certified organic feed for all our laying and breeding flocks. They live with fresh air all their lives.
Eggs
We all know that the greatest perk to chicken raising are the eggs. Those little ovals are just packed with vitamins. But the difference from what you get at the store and what you get when you raise your own birds is can quite literally to be tasted. A farm-raised egg often has a darker yoke and a strong shell, with an amazing fresh flavor. When you eat that farm egg, you’ll never want to go back to grocery store ones again. And we’ve had numerous customers tell us just that!
Here at Chisel’d Creek Farm, we love sharing the bounty we’ve been given. If you aren’t ready to raise chickens, we do the chicken raising part and provide you with fresh eggs. We offer yearly egg subscriptions or sell our eggs at a pay-what-you-can egg stand. We’ve also been known to donate eggs for a big event like a church festival or community breakfast so reach out if you need some help providing a big breakfast for a good cause.
